Local Invention Solves Big
Problem
The second-leading cause of
power outages in the U.S. is squirrels. So, one Columbia man invented a gizmo
that squirrel-proofs your power lines. Squirrels can do major damage to an
acorn. They can also do major damage to a home. Inventor Douglas Wulff said,
"My aunt had a problem with squirrels running across her above-ground power
lines and accessing the roof on her attic. Well, what they were doing was they
were chewing through the parts of the attic. It caused $6,500 dollars worth of
damage to their home." So, Wulff invented the Critterguard. "This product works
because it relies on the fact that if everything is rotating about the diameter
of the line, the squirrels can't get a grasp of or gain a perch on these
rollers. Well, all they do is fall off," he said. |

It's important for homeowners to
know that any rodent-related damage to their houses is not covered by
insurance. So, 32 power companies have bought Critterguards, including Boone
Electric Cooperative. But, Boone Electric will not install the guards, unless
asked. You can use a proactive approach to protect your home from squirrel or
rodent caused damages. |
