The
following information is not an endorsement but simply an attempt to provide
information concerning a product that may be of use for our users. I recommend
all potential customers to investigate company and product claims. However, I
do believe that this product has a reasonable chance to work and I have no
reason to doubt their claims. Just buyer beware.
Power outages mean lost revenue and are thus a major
concern to utility companies. In fact animal damage provide the third most
common cause of electrical outages.
Obviously, the electrical companies
needed a product that would prevent squirrels from being able to climb poles
and/or navigate power lines. One company seeking to solve this problem is
CRITTER GUARD . But believe it or not, this product had much humbler
beginnings. The idea was born when family member's, Bernice Wulff, home was
being invaded by squirrels accessing her roof by a power line. The squirrels
caused $6,500 worth of damage that homeowners insurance did not cover. Joe
Wulff and Doug Wulff invented a solution from a bucket lid and 1 PVC
pipe. After the installation, Bernice had no more squirrels problems. All she
could hear now was a light thud as the wire-walking squirrels
failed to by pass the device falling on her back porch.
With this early
success, an industrial application was made that eventually developed into what
is now known as Critter Line Guard. A second product, The Pole Guard, was
developed to stop squirrels from climbing poles. If you visit the web site you
can view some videos of the two products in action. The site has appropriate
downloads for high-speed internet connection and the slower dial-up version.
What does all this mean for homeowners? Well it means we now have a
solution when dealing with wirewalking squirrels and roof rats. CRITTER GUARD
claims to provide just this solution. Unfortunately, the company only sells the
wire guard directly to electric companies. The liability of electrocution is
too great for them to allow non-electric specialists to install it. Critter
guard recommends that consumers to call their power company's Standards and
Engineering Dept. That department is responsible for the acquisition of new
products. CRITTER GUARD points out that too "many homeowners only call their
customer service dept. This will never work! When they do call the S&E dept
they should reference my web site to that contact. The chance is the Power
Company doesn't even know about this product line yet."
Don't be put
off by the bright red pictures of the devices. They are also produced in
"Utility Gray" to blend in with other electrical type units. The items are made
of primarily durable Polypropylene. The polypropylene has a lifespan of 20
years. That means the product itself will not degraded in that time span. The
actual color has a U.V. protection package of 3-5 years allowing the product's
color to fade uniformly but never fade altogether. The baseline for this data
was taken in weather similar to that of Florida climate. Other equipment is
also made of durable materials so the products should last in the harsh outside
environment for years. Everything was manufactured in the United States.
