Reproductive Masters: How Mice Multiply and Lead to Infestations

Mice are never just a small problem. A single mouse can rapidly turn into a large infestation. Once you have a large number of mice in and around your home, diseases, property damage, and additional pest infestations are right around the corner. Take a closer look at how quickly one mouse can multiply into a large-scale emergency.

Speedy Maturity

Mice mature in as little as six weeks. By the time they're six to eight weeks old, mice can become pregnant and give birth. Some mice may even mature in just about a month. This means you can see multiple generations of mice within just a few short months.

Large Litters

Each litter of mice is itself a big problem. Mice babies, or pups, can be born in litters of between five and 12 pups, though most fall in the middle of that range.

Frequent Pregnancies

The gestation period for mice is just around three weeks. Due to this short period of time, mice can easily get pregnant up to ten times a year, resulting in large numbers of mice very quickly.

Exponential Growth

With the potential for around ten litters a year and about seven pups per litter, each female mouse in your current infestation can produce up to 70 offspring annually. What’s more, the offspring mature quickly and can start reproducing within a month, causing the infestation to grow exponentially—and with it, the damage they can inflict.
